2008 Elderhostel outing

Day 5, Tuesday: Visits to Tournus and Brancion, tasting at Château de Messey

The field trips and dégustations leave time for reading and socializing in the lounge.

  • Tuesday’s agenda
  • Doris reading
  • June reading
  • Joanne reading
  • mother and daughter
  • Jordan and Fran consult a Burgundy book.
  • Harriet in the lounge
  • Theresa in the lounge

In Tournus, where we are docked, is the Romanesque abbey of Saint Philibert. The abbey’s windows are modern because the original were damaged in World War II. As in England, many stained glass windows of French churches were taken down and stored for protection against bombing, but apparently the Saint Philibert windows were not saved.

  • l'Abbaye de Saint-Philibert
  • Françoise briefs us on the abbey’s history and architecture.
  • We gaze up at the abbey’s magnificent façade.
  • June Rice
  • the abbey’s nave and chancel
  • the abbey’s Romanesque columns and arches
  • description of the abbey’s 12th-century mosaics
  • one of the abbey’s 12th-century mosaics

Tournus is more than the abbey....

  • map of Tournus
  • strolling along the quai Nord
  • the quai de Verdun
  • Lois and Ellen board Libellule.

Exploring Tournus has sharpened our appetite for lunch.

  • Tuesday’s lunch menu
  • Chef Mo serves his cheese tart.
  • lunch wines
  • Ben is about to enjoy the cheese-tart lunch.

After lunch we set out for Château de Messey for wine tasting.

  • signs at Château de M1essey
  • The group fans out.
  • Château de Messey’s flowers are second only to its wines.
  • a view from Château de Messey
  • exploring the château’s grounds
  • greens and grays
  • view through two windows
  • Françoise explains Château de Messey’s wines.
  • first, the aroma
  • “What are you noticing about the wine?”
  • our Château de Messey tasting: same terroir, four different years

Usually wine tastings were scheduled for late afternoon, because just before dinner is when one’s senses of taste and smell are at their sharpest. This day, however, Château De Messey has declined to accommodate Françoise’s wishes, so our visit to medieval Brancion comes after the wine tasting.

  • sign at Brancion’s entrance
  • We stroll towards Brancion.
  • No picnics at Brancion!
  • Brancion's main gate, looking in
  • tower at Brancion
  • Saint-Pierre church at Brancion
    • view from St. Pierre church at Brancion
  • exterior of St. Pierre church at Brancion

  • exterior detail of St. Pierre church at Brancion
    • mural in St. Pierre church at Brancion
    • Brancion square tower

Tournus cannot accommodate Libellule overnight, so when we meet her she is docked at a campsite upstream. This proves to be a nice spot for explorations before dinner (not so nice for Françoise, whose bike ride is ended abruptly by a burst tire).

    • a village north of Tournus
    • Tuesday evening menu
    • yet another way to fold a napkin!
    • Françoise explains the dinner’s white wine
    • Kaz describes the cheese as Kate looks on.
    • dinner’s red wine: a 2002 Beaune Premier Cru (!)
